Last month, I began a new series of Biba's Favorite Things: people, places and events that inspire me and bring beauty, style, and joy into everyday life. This month, I caught up with Linda Heister, one of my favorite people. A fellow fashionista, longtime inspiration, and dear friend, Linda has been part of my life for many years.
Our paths crossed often when she was working at Mark Heister Design Inc., her husband's fashion house of 35 years. I was working at the Mayfair Regent hotel where we hosted many fashion events. Over the years, our paths continued to cross while working together on various committees and events throughout Chicago. Beyond our shared history, we also share a cherished tradition: a monthly lunch with a small circle of friends at RL—always at Oprah's favorite table. It's a ritual filled with laughter, conversation, and style, and one I look forward to every month.
Chicago is filled with extraordinary people who shape our city and bring beauty, joy, and kindness into everyday life. Linda is one of those people.
I've had the pleasure of visiting Linda's home and experiencing its beauty through all four seasons, just as I've enjoyed her friendship over time. Recently, I sat down with Linda and asked her to share some of her favorite things. Here is a glimpse into what inspires Linda, in her own words.
It's so easy these days to be swept away by the problems of the world. That's why I'm grateful to my good friend Biba for suggesting I share some of the favorite things that bring me happiness.
Sharing the past 50 years with my amazing husband, designer Mark Heister, in our 100-year-old home in LaPorte, a small city in Indiana just over an hour from Chicago. It's a town filled with beautiful homes, romantic history, and antique malls brimming with family treasures for almost no money. We can't resist rescuing fine china, glassware, silver, linens, furniture, vintage furs, leather goods, and fashion accessories.
I love destroying my manicure while digging in the dirt, tending my flower gardens, and creating arrangements for intimate luncheons and dinner parties.
I treasure having time to indulge my interest in physical fitness and health. I love the fresh air, starry nights, reading, and Sunday mornings when the silence is broken only by songbirds and church bells.
I love shopping at summer farm stands with eggs laid that morning, a real old-fashioned butcher, and unlimited free parking everywhere. And finally, returning home to a table set with our rescued treasures, in anticipation of a quiet evening with dear friends.
Life can still be good if we make the right choices.
